Gavin Cronje Biography



 Gavin Cronje Quick Facts 


Gavin was born on 21 April 1979.

He has been racing since age 14, starting in 100cc Kart racing. 

In 2006 Gavin placed 10th in the European F3000 championship (his first season of single seaters). 

He also finished 8th in the wet whilst testing in Jerez with DPR (GP2) in the same year.

In 2007, he was 4th quickest in the Rookie session in the A1GP held at Brands Hatch.

In 2008 he won the South African Formula VW Championship.

In 2009 he has been signed to the DAMS Formula Le Mans team and has won the first 2 races of the season at Spa-Francorchamps.

All this in spite of being diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic in 1993, meaning the Cronje must continually monitor his diet and blood sugar levels.

In summary, Gavin has the ability to learn circuits and cars quickly. He understands the demands of the sport and is easy to work with. 

When he's not racing, Gavin plays tennis and soccer 
and enjoys a social round of golf. He is also part owner of two "Easylife Kitchens" franchises.

Gavins brother Mark Conje is a works castrol toyota rally driver.

 

 

Racing Career Overview

2010 Gavin moves into rallying, he joins the Motorite racing team to compete in the Sasol SA National Rally Championship in a Volkwagen Polo.. 

2009 Gavin joins the DAMS Formula Le Mans team for the inaugural series alongside Nico Verdonck of Belguim, they win the championship.

2008 Winner of the South African Formula VW championship.

2007 As one of three drivers, Gavin followed the South African A1 GP team, getting an opportunity to drive at the final round of the season at Brands Hatch in April, placing 4th in the Rookie session. He then tested for Dayle Coyne Racing Champ car team in Houston, Texas. Unfortunately bad weather put paid to his chance of participating in the first official test in the new cars. 

2006 Gavin moved from offroad to single seaters, straight into the F3000 - a strong category designed for drivers with 2 years experience. The lack of experience didn't deter Gavin - driving for BCN Competition in the European F3000 championship, he finished 10th overall in his first season of European racing, including a second place finish in Hungary. He tested in Jerez with DPR (GP2) finishing 8th in the wet.

2005 Having been awarded the official seat at Toyota, Gavin competed in the SA offroad championships with a 2.7 litre 4 cylinder Hilux against the 3 litre V6 Nissan, and finished 4th overall. He tested for the official seat in A1 GP in South Africa and was awarded the stand-by driver position.

2004 Gavin moved from Formula Ford to 4 wheel drive/offroad racing. Toyota awarded him the official seat without him ever having competed on dirt and their confidence in his ability to adapt paid off when Gavin placed 3rd overall in the SA National Championship.

2003 He moved back to Karts, qualifying for the Rotax World Finals again and then went on to win the SA Max challenge. Gavin also competed in three local Formula Ford events to prepare for the last round of the UK National Formula Ford Championship held at Brand's Hatch. In doing so, Gavin broke the lap record at Kyalami(which had stood since 1999).

2002 Gavin moved into single seaters and at the end of the season competed int the Formula Ford Festival winning the last chance to qualify. Putting in a good performance, he placed 18th overall out of 60 competitors.

2001 Following his win in Puerto Rico, Gavin leapt from Class F to Class B of the Production Series competing with the Honda V-Tec team. Gavin was leading the championship with three races to go, when he was forced to skip an event due to appendicitus -resulting in him finishing second for the year.

2000 Gavin won the Rotax Max Championship in South Africa. As the winner, he had the opportunity to compete in the World Final in Puerto Rico. He went on to win this event too and describes it as the highlight of his motorsport career to date.

1999 He joined the junior Toyota team driving a Toyota Tazz in class F of the Junior Production car championship, which he won in his first season. This led to him being awarded the Car Magazine Rookie of the Year award. In the same season Gavin also won the 100cc Super Championship.
